How do I cut my own tree?

When you arrive, one of our team members will give you a hand saw and a farm map showing where each of the different varieties of trees is planted. Once you’ve chosen your perfect tree, cut it down and bring it to the checkout area. If you’re placing your tree inside your car, we sell large Christmas tree disposal bags to catch loose needles. We also provide twine to tie your tree to the roof of your car. TIP: If you want to take advantage of our tree shaking and netting/baling services, secure your tree to the roof of your car by running the twine through your car windows and have passengers hold tightly to the twine until you reach the pay shed.

Are pets welcome?

Yes! We know that pets are important members of the family, so they are welcome to come along and enjoy the fun as long as you pick up after them and keep them on a leash.

What should I bring along?

Even though our field roads are open for easy viewing from your car, you’ll likely be doing a lot of walking, so dress for the weather and wear sturdy boots! We provide twine, scissors, hand saws, and lots of friendly advice. Absolutely no chain saws or electric saws are allowed. If you plan to tie the tree to the top of your car, you may want to bring a blanket to put underneath it to prevent light scratching. Or, if you’ll be placing your tree inside your vehicle, you might want to bring along a large sheet to tie around it to avoid getting needles inside your car. For convenience, we sell large Christmas tree disposal bags at the red pay shed that are perfect for this purpose!

How long does it take to grow a Christmas tree?

Depending on the variety, it can take anywhere from 7 to 12 years for a tree to grow to 6 feet. Average growing time is 8 to 9 years.

Is it bad for the environment to cut down a real Christmas tree?

Absolutely not! Today 98% of all Christmas trees are grown on Christmas tree farms. That means they’re grown like a farm crop, so the ones that get harvested this year are replaced by new seedlings next spring.

How many real Christmas trees are sold every year?

According to the National Christmas Tree Association, there are approximately 25-30 million Real Christmas Trees sold in the U.S. every year. Additionally, there are close to 350 million Real Christmas Trees currently growing on Christmas Tree farms in the U.S. alone, all planted by farmers.

How long will a tree keep its needles?

This depends on many factors, such as tree variety, weather conditions, and cutting date. On average, a well-watered tree usually holds its needles for 4-5 weeks. Fraser Fir and Norway Pine tend to hold their needles the longest, while Scotch, White Pine, and Balsam average 3-4 weeks. Spruce tend to last about 2-3 weeks.

For extended freshness, make sure to keep your tree away from all heat sources (fireplace, heat vents, radiator, etc.). Adding a humidifier near or under the tree can also help.

What are the advantages of a real tree over an artificial?

When you choose a real Christmas tree, you’re supporting small business and American farmers. According to the U.S. Commerce Department, about 80% of artificial trees are manufactured in China. On the other hand, Christmas tree farms across the United States support over 100,000 jobs each year. They’re also renewable, recyclable, and free of the non-biodegradable plastics and toxins that end up in our landfills when an artificial tree is discarded.

Are real Christmas trees a fire hazard?

No. In fact, research from the National Fire Protection Association shows that real Christmas trees are involved in less than one-tenth of one percent (0.1%) of all residential fires. Furthermore, of all the Christmas trees sold in 1998, only one-thousandth of a percent (0.001%) were involved in a residential fire. You can minimize fire risk by using proper care (regular watering) and proper placement (away from heat sources). And as with any Christmas tree, be sure to turn off your tree lights at night or when you are away from home.

Which kind of stand should I use?

Choose a Christmas tree stand that holds at least two gallons of water, as trees can absorb up to six quarts a day. Keeping the stand filled is essential — never let it run dry. If the water level drops below the base, the tree will seal itself with sap, blocking its ability to take in more water. If this happens, you’ll need to remove the tree and make a fresh ¼-inch cut across the trunk to reopen it and restore water uptake.

How do I dispose of my tree after Christmas?

Fifty-nine percent of the real Christmas trees harvested each year are recycled in curbside recycling programs. The communities then use the chippings for mulch, hiking trails, playground areas, animal stalls, or landscaping. Whatever the disposal method, real trees are 100% biodegradable, and all are ultimately recycled back into nature.

Why do some of the trees in the field look yellow?

The lighter-colored pine trees that appear more “greenish-yellow” are just as healthy as the ones that are dark green. The difference is that pines naturally lose their dark green color in the winter when the days become shorter, and the tree produces less chlorophyll. For that reason, harvest-ready Scotch, Norway, and White Pines are sprayed with a dark green colorant during the summer to preserve their “evergreen” color for Christmas. Other varieties like firs and spruce retain their dark evergreen color all year round.
